How to meditate at home

There are many reported benefits of meditation,  here’s an article about how to do it at home so you can reap the benefits whenever it suits you.

Meditation is the art of calming ones thoughts to make inner peace with our self. More importantly in today’s society are the incredible health benefits.

It has been used in accelerated learning, managing life threatening conditions, lowering blood pressure, etc. Benefits of meditation are:

  • Lowers oxygen consumption.
  • Decreases respiratory rate.
  • Increases blood flow and slows the heart
  • Increases exercise tolerance in heart patients.
  • Leads to a deeper level of relaxation.
  • Good for people with high blood pressure as it brings the B.P. to normal.
  • Reduces anxiety attacks by lowering the levels of blood lactate.
  • Decreases muscle tension (any pain due to tension) and headaches.
  • Builds self-confidence.

It increases serotonin production which influences mood and behavior. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression, obesity, insomnia and headaches. Helps in chronic diseases like allergies, arthritis etc.

Instruction

  1. First you should know that meditation isn’t religious. It will also pay for itself in time you use meditating. Meditation can make your day more peaceful and stress free while making you more productive. Also realize that meditation takes practice to see results. But like most good things, time and effort is needed.
  2. Now sit with your back straight. You don’t have to have your fingers in OK signs on your knees like in the movies and you can even do it in a chair just as long as your back is straight.
  3. Now let everything good. Most people can’t do this at first because of the huge amount of things in ones head. Once you try to block these out you will realize how difficult it is. I couldn’t do it when I started meditating so I was told to focus on something in front of me. I put a small ball on the ground and would only think of the ball in its present form. Once i started thinking about other balls, or girls or anything else you have to make yourself focus on the ball.
  4. After some time you will be able to focus on one thing and control instead of having a wandering mind. The next step is no thoughts at all. This is even harder to do. Make an effort to ‘throw out’ your thoughts as they come into your head. After time you realize that your thoughts and your identity are 2 different things and you are capable of deciding your thoughts.
