FEATURED ARTICLE: The Benefits of Soap-Free Cleansing

Posted 14 July 10

Here at Ego, we’re pretty big on being soap-free. And we’d love to tell you why we think being soap-free, makes our products just that much more suitable for your skin.

First of all, let’s look at the skin. It’s well known that the skin is the first line of defense against the elements, as well as micro-organisms and irritants.
And it’s the acid mantle, a fine film with a slightly acidic pH on the surface of the skin that helps provide protection for the skin. It plays a very important role as an integral part of the barrier function of the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin. Normal skin surface pH is between 4 and 6.5, although it can vary among the different areas of the skin. Your common everyday soaps are alkalis pH 10 -12, and when used can change the pH of the skin, which can damage its barrier function.

Soap-free cleansers like Ego’s QV range of cleansers are pH balanced. As a result, they will help maintain the pH value of the skin and its barrier function.

By preserving the protective skin oils, soap-free cleansers also help protect
your skin from drying. Soap-free cleansers also tend to be milder than soap-based cleansers, making them ideal for all skin types and especially suitable for sensitive skin.

In Ego’s case, not only are our cleansers soap-free, many are also fragrance-free and are designed to be gentle on the skin. We have also added moisturisers that positively contribute to your skin’s health. That, of course, is a topic for another day.
