FEATURED ARTICLE: Getting your head around Head Lice

Posted 17 August 10

Welcome to the second edition of Skin Care by Ego. It was really encouraging to hear the amount of people that were interested in the Ingredient Introduction, and we hope that we’ve managed to dispel some of the myths regarding what goes in into the things we use.

This month’s edition, we’re looking at the perennial problem of head lice and we’ll look at some ways of dealing and managing head lice in the family. We’ll also look at Eucalyptus Oil as an ingredient in MOOV Head Lice Solution and we see it’s effectiveness in getting rid of the Head Lice problem.

Getting your head around Head Lice
Head lice, they’ve been around for over 5,000 years, and they’ve been the bane
of school-aged children and their parents for probably just as long. The Victorian Department of Health describe head lice as highly adaptable creatures and they survive solely on humans.  Some reasons why they have survived for so long are: their six legs all end in a claw, allowing them to grip the hair; they can detect vibration and hide; they can hold their breath for as long as 30 mins; and their
eggs attach to the hair shaft with a glue-like substance.1

Now for the good news. Head lice can be controlled but it takes a systematic approach, because we know where they live and we know how to find them.

If you follow these steps, the control of head lice in your home and, if all families partake, your child’s school will be greatly improved.

Step1- To help detect the presence of head lice and eggs, use a quality Head Lice combing conditioner and comb on to dry, brushed (detangled) hair.

Step 2- Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue;

Step 3- Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs;

Step 4- If lice are found, the child should be treated with a quality Head Lice treatment. We recommend the Moov Head Lice range;

Head lice are insects and go through a life cycle. The key to treatment and eradication of a head lice infestation is to break their life cycle. A lot of the frustration parents experience stems from their belief that current treatments
don’t seem to work. There are several possible reasons for this. Head lice resistance may be one cause. Another reason for recurring infestation can be attributed to not fully completing a treatment cycle, and therefore not breaking
the lifecycle of the head lice. It is difficult to kill all the eggs present when the infestation is first treated.

Ego’s MOOV Head Lice Range of products is the result of many years of Australian research into this growing social problem. MOOV Head Lice Solution
is Australia’s first natural head lice product to have been tested to ICH GCP standard.2 It has been clinically proven to be twice as effective as the 2004 leading chemical products, when following manufacturer’s instructions.3

1. Victorian Department of Health [online]. 2009 [cited9 August 2010]. Available from URL: http://www.health.vic.gov.au/headlice/resources_pages/school.htm

2. Clinically tested in Australia (2004) by Uniquest to ICH GCP Standard (International Conference on Harmonisation Good Clinical Practice). The research was sponsored by Ego.

3. Over a two week period MOOV trialists received three treatments, each seven days apart, chemical trialists received two treatments each seven days apart as per manufacturer’s instructions. Data held on file.
