Athlete’s foot (also known as tinea pedis) is a fungal infection of the skin that causes scaling, flaking, and itch of affected areas. It is caused by fungi and is typically transmitted in moist areas where people walk barefoot, such as showers or bathhouses.

Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments and are commonly found in shoes, socks, swimming pools, locker rooms and public showers.  They can be ‘picked
up and passed on’ whenever the skin comes in contact with fungi living in these places.  Some people are more prone to fungal infections i.e. people with weakened immune system or diabetes or people on antibiotic or oral steroids.

Cuts and abrasions can result from many causes. The damaged skin is susceptible to infection once the skin is broken. National Kidsafe Day aims to increase awareness of unintentional childhood injuries and their prevention, as well as the valuable work
of Kidsafe – the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Australia,
in public education, advocacy and research into the causes and prevention of unintentional childhood injury.¹

Injuries are a major cause of death and hospitalisation and can have profound effects on children’s health and development through permanent physical and psychological disability.² About 90% of childhood injuries are said to be preventable, as many causes of injury can be controlled.²

Kidsafe, the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Australia, is a not-for-profit charity that aims to prevent and reduce the incidence and severity of unintentional childhood injuries in Australian children aged less than 15 years.¹ In 2011, Kidsafe are promoting Road Safety for children through action, increasing awareness or advocacy.  In 2005–2007, Road transport accidents were the leading cause of injury deaths among children aged 0–14 years, accounting for 209 or 31% of all child injury deaths (2 deaths per 100,000 children).²

Kidsafe works proactively across Australia with parents, communities and governments, to lessen the cost to our health systems of preventable childhood injury.¹ Much has been achieved and continues to be achieved, often with very limited resources.¹

Preventing childhood injuries does not mean “wrapping children in cotton wool” but does involve supervision and creating and maintaining safer environments in which children can learn, grow and develop safety conscious behaviours.¹ Minor bumps, bruises and grazes will always occur but things can be done to prevent serious injury and injury related deaths to children.¹

How long does it really take to treat acne?
When we try and treat acne, we always look for the fastest treatment possible. We look for overnight solutions, when in truth the time it takes to treat acne should be looked at in weeks and months rather than hours and days.

What is Acne? When overactive sebaceous glands become clogged with oil and sticky skin cells, they form blackheads and whiteheads.¹ These glands continue to produce oil in the blocked follicle. This microenvironment within the blocked follicle encourages colonisation by the bacteria P. acnes, which in turn initiates an immune response of treat producing inflammation.²

Think of acne as a marathon, not a sprint. Realistically, it will take 6-8 weeks to start seeing the benefits of treatment and 6-8 months overall. This is because acne needs to be allowed to run its course. When treatment is started the comedones (those white, or dark bumps that give skin a rough texture.³ The bumps are caused by acne and found at the opening of a pore³) will be at different points of development, so some will appear to resolve faster than others.

At Ego we prefer to use Azelaic acid over benzoyl peroxide to treat Acne. Azelaic acid is just as effective as benzoyl peroxide,¹ but with less severe side effects.^2,3 Azelaic acid targets inflammation, the build-up or overgrowth of bacteria and the increased bonding of dead skin cells which clogs the pore that is associated with acne.³

In Australia, Azelaic acid is also the only Over The Counter option available for rosacea treatment. Although rosacea can look similar to acne, it is not acne, nor a form of acne, which makes Azelaic acid very useful for the treatment of both acne and rosacea.
